Overview of the project

Welcome to Armageddon

16th Regiment Company Command: part of 1st Army.

Imperial Hiveworld, military-industrial powerhouse and home of the famed Imperial Guard Steel Legions, Armageddon is a world defined by war.

The Ashes of Armageddon is a project to detail the Second War for Armageddon, when the invasion of the orks of Waa-Ghazghkull threatened to overwhelm the Imperial defenders of the Steel Legion and their allies.

Intended to inspire, entertain and enthral, my hope for The Ashes of Armageddon is to provide a platform for people to show off their creativity, explore a shared world at war, and put hobbyists of all stripes in contact with new friends and sources of inspiration.

What's the appeal?

For wargamers of a certain vintage, Armageddon loomed large, as it was the setting for the boxed game of Warhammer 40,000 2nd edition. While not the de facto setting for 40k itself, anyone who played through the six short training missions in the Battle for Armageddon scenario booklet would have had a scrap or two on the world.

The release of 2nd edition 40k was accompanied by White Dwarf battle reports that were fought over a (curiously green part of) Armageddon, and the world would also turn up in Epic battle reports over the years, too.

These battles – and presumably the Studio's own in-house campaigns and plans – built to create a really rich environment for the planet, that was painted in quite broad brushstrokes. This really appeals to me, as it leaves space for exploration. While there was lots to go on, not everything was detailed – perfect for capturing the imagination.

More than anything else, however, this fictional conflict, its heroes and its villains, are familiar to lots of hobbyists; and it provides a perfect excuse to paint, play and explore the Imperial Guard, Orks and other forces associated with the Second Battle of Armageddon.

The concept: what are we doing?

This blog is a place to explore the Second Battle for Armageddon in more detail, 'zooming in' to explore the interesting little hints and dark corners of the campaign. Capturing the true spirit and scale of the invasion of Armageddon requires the insights, ideas and talents of you lot...

Contributors are invited to submit models and lore using the #ashesofarmageddon tag.

Coming up with an interesting insight into the war is exactly the sort of human (or ork!) level stuff I'm after from contributors. Here are some ideas to give you a feel for the sort of thing needed in an article:
  • Contrasting the relatively safe Tartarus Hive Defence forces with the Hive Gangs of the frontline Hive Infernus.
  • An overview of the Gargants and krew of the Evil Suns' Gargant big mob
  • Looking at the sort of equipment and supply issues the hurriedly-recruited 19th Regiment of the Steel Legion face
  • Who is the Bad Moons Warboss charged with securing the southern passes of the Diablo mountains?
  • ...and a thousand more vignettes to capture the scale of the war.

Sounds great – I'd love to contribute!

I can write  Creativity in everything trumps form, so don't worry about wordcounts or style. From my point of view an ideal article will likely have around 250–500 words per picture. I encourage you to be creative. There's no need to be formal – text can be in the form of in-universe report, a point-of-view story, or anything else that you want.

Images are key – but don't despair if you're not confident in your painting or modelling abilities. Reach out on Instagram by searching for #ashesofarmageddon to find talented artists who can illustrate your work, or chat with them to see how you can work in tandem on an article.

I paint models  Brilliant – visuals are at the heart of the project. Existing models that fit the theme are very welcome – or perhaps want to adopt and bring to life a particular Steel Legion Regiment or Ork Horde? Has the project sparked an idea for a single character model?

All are welcome – and rest assured that you will be credited as you prefer. By default, I'll use your Instagram handle; please let me know if you'd prefer anything else.

The boardgame The Battle for Armageddon will provide common ground for the project and serve as a reference point throughout.

I don't know where to start

No problem – I'm on hand on Instagram and Facebook – just search for 'Death_of_a_Rubricist' and ask away.

If this has sparked your interest, then here's what you can do:
  • Make or paint models to fit the theme of the Second War for Armageddon – and if you're unsure, Orks and Steel Legion of any stripe will always be very welcome!
  • Post those models on Instagram using the tag #ashesofarmageddon
  • Comment here, on the Death of a Rubricist Facebook group.
  • Join the dedicated Discord channel called 'Ashes of Armageddon' for discussion and to ask questions.
